Entry Requirements

1 higher at grade C from either Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics.  Candidates will also have experience of science at National 5 or intermediate 2.  Students that have successfully completed all units on a NQ Applied Science L6 course would also meet the entry requirements. Relevant experience will also be considered.   All applications will be considered.

Description

Are you seeking an exciting career in Scotland’s scientific industry? Do you wish to develop your skills to help you find your dream career? This course is designed to develop your scientific knowledge and help prepare you for a career within Scotland expanding science industry. The first year of the programme gives you the opportunity to develop a wide range of knowledge, skills and experience in cell and biology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry as well as your laboratory experience. In the second year you will design and carry out your own experiments as well as build on your knowledge in cell and molecular biology, microbiology, pharmacology, immunology and biomedical techniques. When you have completed the HND you will be able to pursue a variety of scientific careers at university, industry anywhere in the world.

Course Content

Course units include: You will build up an excellent understanding of a broad range of scientific concepts and skills, including: - Cell Biology - Chemistry - Anatomy and physiology - Microbiology - Mathematics - Biochemistry - Dissertation writing. You will also learn to perform a vast range of scientific techniques essential for industry and academia.

Duration

The full time course will run 3 days a week for 2 years.  August to June. There are various part-time options available.

Progression

When you are finished your HND you will have the option to apply for 2nd or 3rd year of most science courses at all universities. Graduates go on to study Biomedical Science, Forensics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology as well as many others. These courses will allow you to pursue many variable and exciting career paths such as environmental microbiologist, marine biologist, biomedical scientist, industrial production scientist and many more. You will also be able to apply for a variety of technical jobs within the science industry. These include production technician, medical laboratory assistant, school technician and industrial science technician.
