Entry is by interview and candidates must demonstrate their interest and proficiency in music, preparing two contrasting pieces for audition. The course is also suitable for students who have relevant Highers or work experience but need to develop or refine their practical skills for progression to SCQF Level 7 (first year of HND). You are also required to have, or have pending, a range of National 5s and National 4s and/or Standard Grades (levels 3 and above) as well as Core Skills at SCQF level 5. If you have a range of Intermediate 1 and 2 qualifications, these will also be considered. All candidates must provide a suitable reference from an employer, school, or another academic organisation. Description A one or two year, full-time course in music performance to prepare learners for a career in the music industry in areas such as Composition, Song Writing, Training, Live Performance. Course Content The HND in Music is designed for those who wish to develop the knowledge, creative and technical skills required for a career in music. As such, it is suitable for school leavers, adult returners, the self-employed, and those already in employment. Throughout the academic year, the department stage live public gigs at professional Glasgow music venues. These can be attended by friends and family, and can be used for assessment. The course includes classes on the following: - First Study (weekly instrument/composition lessons) - Live Performance - Music Theory - Music Business for Musicians - Songwriting - Music History - Digital Audio Workstations - Stagecraft for Musicians - Music and Image: Graphics - Keyboard Skills for Music Production - Graded Unit project Duration Full Time 2 Academic Years August - June Applicants wishing to study on a part-time basis will be considered and should provide information on this in their personal statement and at interview. Progression Successful completion of the course can lead to the degree courses at University of the West of Scotland, University of the Highlands and Islands (Perth), and Edinburgh Napier University among others. Although many graduates progress to second or third year of university, there are also those who choose to go direct into working in the industry as self-employed musicians.
