Entry Requirements

By audition and interview. As you must demonstrate proficiency in music, you will be auditioned, so come prepared to play/demonstrate at least two pieces of music to an appropriate standard. You will also require to have, or have pending, a range of National 5s and National 4s and/or Standard Grades (levels 3 and above) as well as Core Skills at SCQF level 5. If you have a range of Intermediate 1 and 2 qualifications, these will also be considered.

Description

The National Certificate in Music is aimed at aspiring musicians keen to develop skills in the pop, rock and indie genres, be those school leavers, adult returners or those currently working in the music industry. The course is designed as a starting point in music performance, so if you are interested in working in the music industry or wish to pursue Continuous Professional Development if you are already working in some capacity in the music industry, this is the course for you. You will craft your stage skills in your chosen instrument and/or vocals, working towards regular gigs. You will also get the opportunity to study solo instrument skills or perfect your vocal skills as well as exploring the music business.

Course topics include: - Creative Music Project - Appreciation of Music - MIDI Sequencing - Music: Live Performance - Music: Core Skills - Communication, Numeracy, ICT - Music & Society - Music Project - Planning a Music Event - The Sound & Music Industry - Arranging & Composing Music - Improvising Music - Music: Aural Skills - Modern Music in Practice - Music Performance Session Styles & Techniques - Music Theory & Harmony - Performing Music on One Instrument or Voice, Specialisms in singing, guitar, drums, keyboard and bass.

Duration

Full Time. 1 Academic Year. August - June. Applicants wishing to study on a part-time basis will be considered and should provide information on this in their personal statement and at interview.

Progression

Successful completion of the course will enable you to progress to HNC/HND Music Performance, HNC/D Music Business or possibly HNC/HND Sound Production or HNC/HND TV Production.
