Entry Requirements

You can join our course by three methods: - A minimum of Four National 4 qualifications including Mathematics and a Science subject; - Successfully complete our NQ Level 4 in Engineering. - Learners with relevant industrial experience in lieu of formal qualifications – we are happy to consider applications. All applicants will be asked to visit the college for a taster/information session where we can determine if this course meets your learning needs

Description

What Does the Course Offer to You? This NQ level 5 course covers all the subjects required for an NC but also has a strong emphasis on practical skills and is intended for those interested in developing skills for a career in the fast moving electrical engineering industry. The course is a mix of classroom work and practical activities in our brand new laboratories. Assessment comprises both short written tests and laboratory assignments. The course finishes with a hands on project. This year our students are building and racing robot cars. Bursary students are given their own set of tools to keep and kits of parts to build a range of projects such as amplifiers, power supplies, and test instruments

Course Content

What is in the course? Electrical theory, plus hands on hardware and software work. Electrical and Electronic Theory: - Electrical Principles - Power Systems - Mathematics - Communications - Earthing Systems - Electrical Safety - Electrical Machines - Electrical Plant Maintenance. Practical hands on work: - Information Technology - Electrical Testing and Measurement - Electrical Wiring Skills - Fundamental Electronics - Installation of Conduit Systems - Soldering and Circuit Assembly Techniques - Electrical Project

Duration

Full Time. 1 Academic Year. August - June. Usually about 3 days per week timetabled study.

Progression

The NQ Electrical Engineering qualification should allow you to progress to study our courses such as: the NQ in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (level 6), or the HNC in Electronics, or the HND in Electrical Engineering. You may also be able to gain employment or a Modern Apprenticeship with energy companies, engineering contractors, consulting engineers or local authorities.
