Description

This two-year course allows you to study mechanical engineering to SCQF level 8. During your studies you will gain knowledge and will be given opportunities to apply what you have learned and in doing so develop skills such as problem solving and critical analysis, both essential to a career in engineering. During your studies you will be given access to the faculty resources, which include workshops, CAD suites and labs.

Course Content

Year one of the HND introduces you to the classical, well-established subject areas associated with mechanical engineering. Subject areas include: - Engineering Mathematics - Materials Science - Solid Mechanics - Thermodynamics - Fluid Mechanics - Fluid Power - Computer Aided Design. Year two of the HND builds on the concepts introduced in year one through the introduction of more advanced topics. Subjects include: - Engineering Mathematics - Heat Transfer - Fluid Mechanics - Strength of Materials Advanced and Plant Systems. Furthermore, within year two and as part of your Graded Unit 2 project, you will be presented with a problem that requires an engineering solution. The project asks you to design, build and test an engineering device to overcome the problem presented.

Duration

Full Time. 2 Academic Years. August - June.

Progression

Further study - An HND in Mechanical Engineering allows you to progress to University, subject to meeting the entry criteria of the University. Previous students have progressed to third year entry at Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of the West of Scotland and second year entry at Glasgow University and Strathclyde University. Employment - This course is intended to provide you with the technical education requirements for the position of Technician Engineer. The syllabus is broad-based to allow for future employment with mechanical engineering contractors, consulting engineers or local authorities.
