Entry Requirements

Relevant National Certificate (NC), National Qualification (NQ) or 2 SQA Highers (one of which should be English or language based). A passion for the outdoors and a good level of fitness is essential. Mature learners with experience but no formal qualifications will be considered on merit. All candidates will participate in a recruitment process.

Description

This two year, full-time course is offered with and outdoor focus, and will equip you with the knowledge and skills to work as a professional within the adventure sports / outdoor education sector. This course includes an embedded, stand-alone, industry-recognised Professional Development Award in Sports Coaching at that is jointly certificated with sportscotland and the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). You will have the opportunity to work with organisations in the public, commercial or voluntary sector. There will also be an opportunity to gain additional industry recognised governing body qualifications. A PVG will be required to undertake the mandatory placement which is embedded in the course.

Course topics include: Year 1: - Sports Development - Human Anatomy, Physiology & Biomechanics in Sport - Sports Coaching & Development PDA - Developing Professional Practice - Graded Unit 1 - Foundations of Outdoor Activities - Work Placement - Safe Practice in Outdoor Activities Year 2: - Fitness Conditioning in Sport - Sports Mechanics - Improving Coaching in Sport - Coaching of Sports Performance Development - Sports Development & Research - Coaching & Developing Sport: Graded Units 2 & 3 - Psychology of Sports Performance - Managing Volunteers in Sport & Recreation - Application and Management and Organisational Skills in Outdoor Activities - Managing a Sport or Fitness Related Event

Duration

Full Time. 2 Academic Years. August - June.

Progression

Successful HND students can progress to 3rd year at a variety of Universities including; University of Highlands & Islands, UCLAN, Cumbria, & West of Scotland. Employment within the outdoor education sector.
