If you do not meet the entry criteria for your chosen course, you may be offered an alternative course in a similar subject area. Applicants will be assessed through their personal statement and be invited in for interview based on the personal statement as part of the recruitment process Successful candidates must obtain a PVG and participate in occupational health screening. You need to provide a comprehensive personal statement with your application which MUST include the following: State why you wish to study health care. - Include the type of health care field you would like to work in and state why. - What does the term discrimination mean and what would you do as a health care worker if you witnessed a service user being discriminated by a colleague? - Describe the skills and qualities that make an effective care worker and give an example - Include the skills, qualities and attributes you believe you have that would make you the right person to work in your chosen field Description The HNC Healthcare Practice is for students who are interested in a career in healthcare. This course provides a broad foundation of the skills and knowledge required to prepare students to work within the care field or progress onto further study. **Please Note: When completing your personal statement please follow the guidelines closely Course Content The course comprises 10 units delivered over one year. The course promotes and instils the values and skills required to work within a health care field. It is delivered using a variety of teaching methods including tutorials, group work, self-directed study and simulation. Units include: - Principles of Professional Practice - Understanding Personal and Professional Development - Essential Skills for Care - Safe Working Practice for Care - Physiology for Care Professions - Therapeutic Relationships: understanding behaviour - Sociology for Care Practice - Individual Pathways in Health and Social Care - Learning Through Practice - The Graded Unit A wide range of assessment strategies are employed including essay and report writing, closed book examinations, presentations, practical observations and group work. You will also complete a 12-week clinical placement within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. During this time you must complete 24 hours of clinical practice per week alongside days learning in college. In most cases this will consist of two 12-hours shifts in a hospital placement and two days spent in college. Duration Full Time 1 Academic Year August - June. Progression The course is designed to meet the requirements for entry to many health-related degrees including nursing, allied health professions and paramedic science. Successful completion will also allow you to gain employment as a senior healthcare support worker. There is also an option to articulate into year 2 of BSc Nursing in Adult, Learning Disability and Mental Health branches at Glasgow Caledonian University upon meeting certain additional requirements.
