Entry Requirements

What you need to quality for entry ... There are several ways you can join our course: - Two Higher passes at grade C (One must be Mathematics or Physics) OR - Successful completion of the NQ Level 6 Mechanical & Electrical course OR - Successful completion of an NC Level 5 in Electrical or Electronic Engineering with suitable mathematics units OR - Successful achievement of a Foundation Apprentice Engineering award OR - Students who already have an HNC in Electrical Engineering are very welcome to apply for direct entry to Year 2 of the course. OR - Other equivalent qualifications or experience. Learners with relevant industrial experience in lieu of formal qualifications – we are happy to consider applications. Candidates without formal qualifications may be asked to demonstrate their suitability for the course and invited to attend an evaluation session at the college to ensure that they are placed on the correct level of course.

Description

Do you want to work in Scotland’s Engineering industry? Do you wish to develop your skills? Do you wish to enhance your career progression? Do you want to become an Electrical Engineer? The HND Electrical Engineering award will develop your ability to analyse and solve electrical engineering problems, and apply knowledge, understanding and skills to electrical circuits, power systems, electrical machines, renewable energy, and safety systems. The award provides a broad based technical education for those intending to start work in electrical engineering at technician level or who wish to progress to university to study at degree level. The Year 1 of the course enables you to achieve an HNC in Electrical Engineering. Year 2 of the course enables you to gain an HND in Electrical Engineering. In Year 2, you will undertake a project which will allow you further develop and integrate the knowledge gained throughout the individual units in the course. You can pick a project that will enhance your academic progression to university, or give you in-depth knowledge to maximise your career opportunities with our major engineering companies, or an entrepreneurial project that will assist you in setting up in business.

Course Content

The course includes electrical theory, plus hands on hardware and software work. Course topics include: - Electrical Principles - Electrical Machines - Power Systems - Electrical Installation Design - Three Phase Systems - Power Electronics - Programmable Logic Controllers - Utilisation of Electrical Energy in Buildings - Renewable Energy Systems - High Voltage Electrical Safety - Mathematics (now including Mathematics options for university entrance) - IT - Engineering Software - Control Systems and Transducers - Inspection & Testing - Transmission Lines - Electrical Project - Business awareness and CPD - Application of Electrical and Electronic Instruments

Duration

Your full time course will last 2 Academic Years It will run from August - June.

Progression

The HND Electrical Engineering qualification may enable you to progress to year 3 of Electrical Engineering degree programmes at various universities. We are happy to do all that we can to maximise your chances of acceptance into university and offer customised course options to students wishing to go on to university. Please note that entry criteria and year of entry may vary from University to University. Careers - We actively encourage our students to seek careers in engineering and arrange guest speakers and visits to industry. Learners wishing to progress directly to employment can find jobs as Trainee Engineers or Technicians with energy generation and transmission companies, renewables developers, engineering contractors, consulting engineers or local authorities.
